From athens to berlin – without love, but with explosive content

Internationalization of the greek problem through bombs?

The letter bomb defused this afternoon in the chancellor’s office comes from athens, according to the greek anti-terrorist agency. It is identical in design to other bombs currently found by the dozen at foreign embassies in athens. As these lines are being written, the ticker is running with the news that three more bombs have been found in the athens international airport. News broadcasts are regularly interrupted. In addition to the general uncertainty, the local media are trying to convey that the terrorist action has caused considerable damage to the country’s international reputation.

Chancellor angela merkel, to whom the package was addressed, was not in danger because of her trip to belgium. The sender is reported to have been the greek ministry of economy. It seems strange to an attentive observer that since the last government reshuffle in september 2010, no ministry of that name has existed in the country.

It seems strange to many that at least the bomb to the german chancellor was able to bypass all airport security checks, both in athens and berlin. Yesterday, numerous commentators in greece were amused by the fact that one of the packages found was supposed to go to french president nikolas sarkozy. "How can anyone be so naive as to believe that such a package will get past airport security scanners, many commentators opined. Initially, the ineffective construction of the explosive devices was also a subject of ridicule.

Series of bombs

Now, however, according to the latest state of the investigation, it is clear that the bombs were not intended to kill, but rather to injure and cause fires in the event of an explosion. Apparently, the terrorists were not interested in the damage, but in a demonstration. The intentions of the perpetrators were probably to internationalize the greek problem, according to the main evening news program on alter channel. This thesis is also held by numerous other experts.

On tuesday at noon in athens bombs had exploded in the diplomatic missions of switzerland and russia. A package sent to the bulgarian diplomatic mission was defused by a controlled explosion. The german embassy was to receive a package as well as the chilean embassy. The package to the chileans was piquantly detonated right in front of the greek parliament. The parcel courier had informed the terrorist authorities of his suspicions by cell phone and immediately stopped his onward journey.

Who is behind the bombs?

Official announcements speak of a random arrest of two suspects. The partners stubbornly refuse to testify and loudly insulted the journalists present during their presentation at the athens court.

How did it come to the coincidence? This is what the communist party of greece, among others, wonders, suspecting a provocation behind the whole action. Shortly after the discovery of the foiled al-qaeda package bombing, a series of letter bombs of a similar pattern began in athens. Immediately after the delivery of the first bomb consignments, two men suspected of terrorism were caught by the police during an identity check on monday. This coincidence may seem unusual for outsiders, but it is understandable from an athenian point of view.

For several months now, mobile units of the greek police have been patrolling the city on scooters. This "dias"-group controls all the people it suspects of being part of it. Already suspicious appears who does not seem to be known to the officials operating in the local area. Almost every passer-by in major greek cities has already been subjected to such controls.

Both suspects are already in custody. As suspected terrorists they are not protected by the greek personal law. That’s why, besides their names, family circumstances were also revealed. One of the suspects is son of a famous greek cultural figure.

"We will not play this game with you", according to greek media, they commented on all the judge’s questions. The suspects are charged with, among other things, forming a terrorist organization, making and using explosives. Terror suspects not expected to help greek authorities find more perpetrators.

Similar actions have been carried out in the past by italian extremists. The police therefore ame that, in addition to domestic collaborators, contacts abroad must also be investigated.
